In the vein of Tommy Emmanuel, this young fellow was on the NK Forster Guitar Maker videos. This is him playing a cafe in Canada. Anyone know this young chap? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DsElpvS7RLU&feature=related |

Yup, good 'ole Welsh chap... I saw him play a coffee shop session at the Cheltenham guitar show earlier this year. He was testing out some NK Forster guitars- I was having coffee with a friend, and as soon as he arrived, the whole room filled with people- the atmosphere was electric, and his playing was exceptional, in the same vein as Tommy Emmanuel. He apparently played Andy manson's Mermaid guitar during the day too- that would have been fascinating to watch..... |

Wow! This kid can play. Nice to see real Fingerstyle being embraced by the kids...he did a great Merle Travis tune on one of the videos which I really enjoyed. |

So the Forster Vids reveal a newbie with chops. I enjoyed his showmanship as well as his great playing. He likes the tussled hair look, and I do too after hearing him. I don't think I'll comb my hair all week in his honor. ![]() Go Gareth, stay humble. |

He is VERY humble. After seeing him with TE a year ago I exchanged a few emails with him and his Dad who does road manager for him. He is a stunning player, and he's still just a kid, so he has a whole world of developing to go!! here's him & Tommy together playing cannonball rag it gets REALLY interresting around 2:40....... http://youtube.com/watch?v=GDL1HgCPCWQ&feature=related he's not touring with Tommy at the minute, Andy McKee is with him now (saw them on Tuesday!!) |

OK it's probably just me, but I think yes he's a great technician, but where is the music? I think we get seduced by sparkling technique and the fast fingers and forget that it's the music that counts. It's not all about how many notes you can play per minute. I'm the same with Tommy Emmanuel, leaves me cold, great guitar player but not a good musician. Now, the late Erich Roche, a contemporary player who was a great musician. Colin |

Colin, I think a woman heard you. ![]() I know what you are saying, but this kid will win over the masses me thinks. Was Elvis a great musician? How about Liberace? Not my favorites, but these guys were showmen. Out of the ordinary, beyond a normal players ability, and having more fun than legally allowed by law, it puts folks like that in a class all their own. |

Colin, I would have to respectfully disagree with you, on Tommy Emmanuel anyhow I dont know enough about think youngster - I happen to think that some of his own compositions are fabulous, and not all are hyper-speed pickfests either,,, Im a big fan of the meat of playing, as opposed to the relish,,, but I think TE has both - now Leo Kottke on the other hand - I feel the same way you do about TE,,, mabye it all boils down to personal taste? I agree with Colin 100%. I see a lot of these musicians as entertainers rather than artists, and I'd rather hear art. Technique is a means to an end, not an end itself. |
he's not touring with Tommy at the minute, Andy McKee is with him now (saw them on Tuesday!!)
Wow Martin, I really like Andy McKee's music and playing style, a lot of original stuff from him. I wish there were some vids of the two of them on the tube. What was it like seeing these two together? Colin, I looked up some of Erich Roche's vids on YouTube as well. He was a great player, the one I saw of him instantly reminded me of McKee. I wonder how he died? http://youtube.com/watch?v=S-tO6IFwBXI Eric Roche: She Drives Me Crazy Definitely some great music here. |

Bruce, Eric was a truly great player, not only that but he passed his skills on to other players. He regularly taught at the Academy of Contemporary Music here at Guildford, I was lucky enough to attend half a dozen or so of hi Master classes there, he just made his lyrical paying look effortless (you never see the hours of practice these great players put in!). Eric died tragically young a couple of years ago from cancer. That piece isn't typical Eric, he could play the percussive stuff but was better know for more lyrical playing. Colin |
